Help Desk Survival Guide - Accounts FAQ
Q. What is a HealthCareID and how do I get one?
A HealthCareID is a computer username that is assigned to a University of Iowa Health Care staff member or faculty member. New UI Health Care employees are assigned HealthCareID as part of the hiring process.
A HealthCareID consists of some combination of the individual’s last name, first initial, and in some cases, middle initial. For example, a person named Gene Splicer might be assigned gsplicer as his HealthCareID.
Q. What is a HealthCareID used for?
HealthCareIDs are the usernames that UI Health Care faculty, staff and students use when accessing HCIS-managed email and network resources. These applications and resources include Workstation Login, Epic, The Point, Conflict of Interest Web Site, and Remote Access.
Each person who is assigned a HealthCareID is required to select a password to ensure the security of his or her online resources.
HealthCareID passwords are valid for up to 180 days, but may be changed more often, if desired. An automated system notifies staff members when their passwords are about to expire.
To change your HealthCareID password:
Launch Internet Explorer.
Navigate to http://healthcareid.uiowa.edu
Click the My password will expire/has expired link.
Enter your HealthCareID in the HealthCareID field.
Enter your old password in the Old Password field.
Enter your new password in the New Password field and in the Retype New Password field.
Click Next.
Q. How is a HealthCareID different from a HawkID?
UI Health Care faculty, staff, and students have two IDs - a HealthCareID for health care workstation logins and applications such as Epic, Outlook, and the Point; and a HawkID for University applications such as ICON, ISIS, and Employee Self Service. For a complete list of applications using these IDs click here.
Both HealthcareID and HawkID are the same in most cases, however they both have a distinctive password. Users have the ability to reset their HealthcareID to be the same as their HawkID
Q. What is Epic and how do I get an account for it?
Epic is the UI Health Care electronic medical record system that is replacing IPR(INFORMM Patient Record).
Epic access is only granted to UI Health Care faculty and staff members who have a legitimate job related need for access to patient records.
Access to Epic is managed by the HCIS Identity Management Team (IMT). A staff or faculty member’s supervisor must contact the Identity Management team via Help Desk Request or by email to request that appropriate Epic access rights be established for the staff member.
Faculty and staff log on to Epic with their HealthCareID’s and passwords. HealthCareID passwords can be changed by clicking the Change Password option in Epic’s Help menu and following the on-screen prompts.
To change your Epic password:
Epic uses the HealthCareID and password.
Changing your HealthCareID may be done using the procedures listed above.
HealthCareID’s may also be changed by displaying Epic’s Help menu, selecting Change Password, and following the onscreen prompts.
Q. What is IPR and how do I get an account for it?
IPR (INFORMM Patient Record) is the University of Iowa Health Care electronic medical system that is currently being phased out.
IPR accounts are created only for UI Health Care staff members who have a job related need.
Effective May 2, 2009, most IPR functionality will be disabled and migrated into Epic.

In order to receive access to additional job related GE/IDX features, a staff member must complete classes on each of those features.
GE/IDX passwords expire after 180 days. A staff member may use the same password for her/his GE/IDX account and her/his HealthCareID; however, the passwords are not automatically synchronized.

- Select Settings.

Cerner is a company that develops and markets software solutions for the healthcare industry.

At present, Pathology uses Cerner’s PathNet module. PathNet is managed and supported by the Health Care Information Systems INFORMM/Cerner Systems (ICS) group.
Clinicians outside of Pathology never access PathNet directly. Instead, all Lab orders and results are routed through Epic to the patient's record.
