Health Care Information Systems is charged with supporting the information technology needs of the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics and the Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine. Our goal is to provide the highest level of support for the clinical, educational, and research enterprises within our organization.

Advisory Committee

Health Care Information Systems receives direction through Hospital Information Systems Advisory Subcommittee, a recognized subcommittee chartered by the UIHC Hospital Advisory Committee. Health Care Information Systems also receives direction from the Carver College of Medicine Curriculum Strategic Planning Committee and the Carver College of Medicine Research Advisory Council.

Strategic Plan

Health Care Information Systems conducted a major strategic planning process from 8/1/01 – 2/1/02. The result of this effort was the development of a 5 year Information Technology Strategic Plan. This plan includes replacement of many core administrative and clinical systems. Execution of the 5 year strategic plan began in July 2003, and is progressing according to schedule. The plan is reviewed on an annual basis to ensure that initiatives are aligned with institutional needs.

Chief Information Officer

Lee Carmen has been CIO for University of Iowa Health Care since July 2001. He is also the Director of Health Care Information Systems, and the Security Officer for the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics and the Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine. He provides leadership, direction, and strategic planning for the information technology staff and functions in support of University of Iowa Health Care.
